Thank you for your interest in applying for a Street Tree.  Unfortunately, all available trees have been reserved at this time.

However, some trees will become available during the next several weeks as we conduct site inspections.  So, we recommend that you submit a wait list application as there is a high likelihood that we will be able to fulfill wait list requests.  Click here for the
Wait List Application.  (To view this PDF document, you will need Adobe Reader, which you can download for free here.)  You may submit the application form by email, fax, or mail.  We will continue to accept applications after the Feb 15 deadline.

Please read ALL of the below information to ensure that your application is processed successfully.

Over the past 28 years, our Denver Digs Trees program has provided roughly 43,300 affordable and free trees to Denver residents, helping to enhance quality of life in our city.

Street trees improve our quality of life. They beautify our neighborhoods, improve property values, and support good health by encouraging us to spend time outdoors. They also provide habitat for wildlife, filter air pollution, and cool our communities with their shade, which conserves energy and saves us money.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The spring street trees MUST be planted in the Public Right-of-Way (NOT on private property) and within the City of Denver. The Public Right-of-Way is generally the "tree lawn" space between the sidewalk and the curb or, in the absence of a "tree lawn," the space within 10 feet of the curb. Once planted, property owners are responsible for the tree's care (watering and pruning). If you want to be notified about our Fall Shade Trees for Yards (private property trees), click
here.

You may view the Spring 2012 Tree List & Descriptions (pages 4 & 5) before starting your application.

3 Easy Steps to Apply:

Step 1: Plan for Your Tree

Street trees MUST be planted along the street in the Public Right-of-Way. The City of Denver has spacing guidelines that should be followed to avoid hazards and ensure the health of street trees.

New Street Trees Should Follow These Spacing Requirements:
 -  Your medium or large shade tree(s) should be planted at least 35 feet away from other large trees (trees 30 feet or taller at maturity) and at least 25 feet away from small ornamental trees (trees 25 feet or shorter at maturity).*
 -  Plant at least 10 feet away from existing dead, dying or over-mature trees that will be removed within three years.
 -  Plant 10 feet away from driveways, alleys & fire hydrants.
 -  Plant 30 feet away from the curb at an intersection.
 -  Shade trees should be at least 20 feet away from streetlights and stop signs.
 -  Plant 5 feet away from buried utility lines (Call 1-800-922-1987 to have your underground utilities marked – a FREE service).

* If your site requires a small ornamental tree (25 feet tall or shorter at maturity) due to multi-strand overhead power lines or restricted spacing, your tree should be planted at least 25 feet from other trees. Small ornamental trees must be at least 30 feet away from streetlights and stop signs.

Step 2: Submit an Application

On average, one tree costs The Park People $125 to provide. We typically offer trees for $25 each and for free to residents of 23 target neighborhoods with particularly low tree canopy cover. THIS SPRING ONLY, thanks to a special opportunity through Denver Parks and Recreation Forestry Division and the continued support of our sponsors The City of Denver’s Office of Economic Development and Xcel Energy Foundation, we are pleased to offer free trees to ALL Denver residents!

Availability is limited. Applications must be received by February 15, 2012. The sooner we get your request, the better chance you'll have of getting your first choice of tree(s). After reading through the rest of the below information, you may apply online.

Step 3: Pick up Your Tree(s)

Site Inspectors will visit your property in February or March to confirm the proper spacing and mark where your street tree(s) must be planted.

In early April, you'll receive a confirmation letter to let you know whether your property meets the spacing requirements, which tree(s) you've been approved for, and where to pick up your tree(s) on April 21, 2012 between 8am and 10:30am.

We'll have our
Earth Day Yard Tree Sale on that same day with additional varieties for private property planting. All proceeds help support our efforts to add more trees to our community!
